Bobby Ray Long, 81, of Olney IL. passed away Friday Feb. 22, 2019, 9:38 am at Carle Hospital in Urbana IL surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be on Saturday March 2nd from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Christian Church of Olney with a Celebration of Life ceremony at 3:00. Thrasher Funeral Home of Olney will be assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorials may be made out to Olney Tiger Wrestling, Rolling Thunder Illinois Chapter 3 or East Fork Bassmaster’s as he was a big supporter of all three.
Bobby R. Long was born Jan. 12, 1938 in Richland County IL., son of Paul B. and Bernice M. (McCleary) Long. He married Bonnie Padgett on Sept. 30, 1961 and they started their wonderful life together.
For many years Bob worked in the oil field for Tri-State Oil Tool and other companies. He also worked at Olney Tire and then retired from the TLE dept. at Olney Wal-Mart.
In his youth Bob grew up on the banks of the Little Wabash river near Wynoose IL, hunting, trapping and fishing with his brothers Charles (Doc), Bill, and the rest of the Long-McCleary-Mason family. He was in the US Navy from 1955 to ’58. He also coached boy’s baseball in Olney at the Little League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion levels. He played softball for the IGA and Olney Merchants slow pitch softball teams as they travelled all over Illinois and Indiana. He loved to pitch washers and visit with his extended family at the annual Long Family Chowder. Bob’s passion later in life was watching his grandchildren grow up, watching Cardinal Baseball, and fishing with his East Fork Bassmaster’s Club buddies.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Bonnie, son Bryan Long (Debbie) of St. Elmo IL, daughter Jenny Gordon of Olney, daughter Chris Schmidt (Tony) of Olney, and daughter Tara Pottorff (Drew) of Olney. Grandchildren Benjamin Gordon (Hallie), Ashley Medler (Mark), Schuyler Schmidt (Alexys), Molly Schmidt (Gregg), Jenna Long, and Ean Pottorff. Great grandchildren Tyler, Abram, Marlee, Liam, Ezekiel, and an unborn great grandchild on the way.
Preceding him in death were his parents (Paul and Bernice) and his two brothers Charles (Doc) and Bill.
